Apple is rolling out several AI-powered enhancements to watchOS, as unveiled during its 2024 Apple Event on Monday. While many of these updates were initially introduced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, the keynote this morning provided further details.
One of the notable additions to watchOS 11 is the Translate app, which will now be available on Apple Watches. As with other Apple devices, the Translate app utilizes AI for speech recognition and translation across various languages.
For users of the Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra, the Translate feature will function even without a phone connection. According to Apple, these are the only models with sufficient storage to download the necessary language models, allowing up to 20 models to be stored simultaneously.
AI is also enhancing the Smart Stack feature in watchOS, which leverages contextual information to display relevant widgets. With the upcoming update, Smart Stack will automatically add new widgets when they're most useful, based on factors like the time of day or the user's location.
Another AI-driven upgrade in watchOS 11 includes a new "photos" watch face that uses machine learning to identify and curate images from the user’s library.
