Google has launched its Pixel 9 smartphones earlier

Google has introduced its latest Pixel 9 smartphones, highlighting their significant AI advancements. The launch happened earlier than usual, as Google typically unveils new Pixel models in the fall. This time, however, the updates are substantial compared to previous versions.

The new Pixel 9 models come with deeper AI integration. Notably, one feature allows users to search for information and images directly within their screenshots, demonstrating Google's enhanced AI capabilities. Additionally, the Gemini chatbot offers features accessible as overlays on other apps, showcasing the new AI-focused approach.

At Google’s Bay View campus in Mountain View, California, Rick Osterloh, the company’s Senior Vice President of Devices and Services, shared Google's direction with AI. He introduced the audience to the “Gemini era,” a phase that will see the development of Google’s advanced AI model.

The Pixel 9 series includes several models: the base Pixel 9 with a 6.3-inch display priced at $799, the larger Pixel 9 Pro XL with a 6.8-inch screen, and the Pixel 9 Pro, which features an upgraded camera system but at a higher price. A foldable option, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, is also available.

Shipping for the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL will begin in late August, with the Pixel 9 Pro and Pro Fold models following in September. Preorders open on August 13. During the event, Google showcased Gemini’s new conversational capabilities and highlighted updates to the phones' design, including the installation of Google's advanced camera system and the new Tensor G4 chip.

Beyond smartphones, Google also introduced the Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Buds Pro 2. The smartwatch has a heart rate monitoring feature that will automatically contact emergency services if the user's heart stops, available in the UK and EU.

Despite these advancements, Google's global smartphone market share remains under 1%, according to IDC, with Samsung and Apple leading the market. In the US, Google holds 4.5% of the market, ranking fourth in smartphone operating systems. Analysts note that while the Pixel line may not dominate sales, it exemplifies the capabilities of the Android operating system, which is used by over 80% of smartphone users worldwide.

The event also covered Google’s ongoing efforts to integrate AI across its products, aiming to maintain its competitive edge. Google recently enhanced its core products, including its search engine, with AI features. Additionally, the company announced a partnership with Peloton, offering Fitbit Premium subscribers free access to Peloton’s training class library.
